Supporting Foster Families with Clothing, Food, Toys, and More

The most common struggle experienced by foster parents is lack of support during the difficult times of caring for kids who have experienced abuse and neglect. Missouri provides the 49th lowest stipend for foster parents in the US, while Kansas is the 43rd lowest. This insufficient support for foster families increases the barriers to take in children who need a safe, loving home.

Sammy’s Window clothing closet helps lift the tangible burden of caring for foster and adopted children so that more families can take on the care of children and provide free items. With the continued help of community donations, FosterAdopt Connect gives many of the items needed to help raise a child, which depending on location, may include:

  • New or gently used, clean clothing
  • New or gently used shoes
  • New socks and underwear
  • Hygiene products
  • Formula
  • Dry goods
  • New or like new books
  • New toys
  • Baby equipment
  • School supplies

Why is Sammy’s Window Important?

One day in Sammy’s Window, a young teenage boy brought gift cards and cash that he asked for ahead of Christmas so that he could donate to Sammy’s Window in time for the holiday. While he was still standing at the counter, the phone rang. A 9-month pregnant, 24-year-old woman was calling to say she just learned all her younger siblings were returning to foster care. She was pleading with Children’s Division to place the children in her home, but she needed everything one would need to raise multiple children.

Because of community donations, Sammy’s Window could provide beds, mattresses, food, hygiene items, school supplies, and more. However, Christmas was just around the corner and it was too late for her to participate in the Give Joy Holiday program. Thankfully, the young man standing at the counter had what this young family needed. Through shared tears, this generous teenager told the young mom that Christmas was covered for all her children.
