FosterAdopt Connect SWMO
FosterAdopt Connect SWMO (Springfield) is a nonprofit organization that specializes in solving problems for kids and families involved in and affected by the child welfare system. Our mission is "to provide foster and adopted children a stable, loving and nurturing family environment by support and advocacy for abused and neglected children and the families caring for them."
As our local foster and adoptive friends will tell you, we have gone through a few iterations in our journey to becoming FosterAdopt Connect. Founded in 2012 by longtime foster/adoptive parent Melinda Nicholson, with the advice and tutelage of Lori Ross (founder of Midwest Foster Care and Adoption Association), the Family Matters Resource Center was opened in a small strip mall by a handful of foster and adoptive parents and advocates in March of 2013. The first resource center, at 1774 ½ S. Grant, in Springfield, Missouri, provided direct services through Sammy’s Window, training, support groups and advocacy.
In September of 2014, MFCAA acquired Family Matters Resource Center in Springfield, changing the name to Midwest Foster Care and Adoption Association SWMO. Along with this change, service provision in the Southwest Missouri area began to increase. Four staff members were hired, and services began to be better known in the community. As soon as the ink was dry on that sign, however, in the fall of 2015, when the Southwest Missouri resource center found a new and larger home at the current location, 509 S. Cavalier, in Springfield, the company’s name was changed to FosterAdopt Connect to eliminate geographic barriers and better describe what the organization does.
Despite our many name changes, the mission has stayed the same. In our new location we’ve added new programming, including targeted recruitment for older youth through our Extreme Recruitment program and front end family finding through our 30 Days to Family program, as well as more direct services to families and children with significant mental health and behavioral needs in the home through our Behavioral Interventionist program, bringing more support to foster and adoptive families than ever before. Our newest program, Community Connections Youth Project (CCYP) is a voluntary, strength-based case management program for young adults who have aged out of the foster care system without a a strong network of positive/caring adult role models in their lives.
With the help of the generous and compassionate Southwest Missouri community, we know that we can anticipate accomplishing great things. We look forward to continuing to work with our incredible and passionate families to transform children’s lives, one child and one family at a time.
